Horse races in the early tango sheet music copies

gain we are overwhelmed by a large collection of sheet music copies. This time we devote ourselves to single out those dedicated to another Argentine passion: racing horses and the world around them (horses themselves, jockeys, trainers, owners and fans.

All the tangos mentioned here, save for some exception, are prior to 1925.

Moñito (Marrón Glacé)”: by Eduardo Arolas. «Dedicated to the honorable Mr. Emilio de Alvear, affectionately». It was a famous horse in 1917. Thereafter its title was changed for “Marrón glacé”. It was recorded by the composer that same year and later by other groups.

“Dinamita”: also by Arolas. «Dedicated to my beloved parents and siblings». Recorded by Roberto Firpo in 1917

Homero”: by Roberto Firpo, «Dedicated to the honorable Mr. Juan José Rodríguez Silva».

“Indiecita”: another by Firpo. «Dedicated to Dr. Luis S. Saavedra». Both recorded by its composer.

Pulgarín”: by Julio De Caro and José María Rizutti. On the upper side it says: «Dedicated to the honorable sportsman Mr. Julio Victorica Roca, owner of the crack».

La polla”: by Francisco Canaro. «Dedicated to Dr. Luis Galdiano, Amadeo Carelli and Antonio M. González». This tango became well-known when later Luis César Amadori added lyrics to it and turned into “Madreselva”.

“El zurdo”: by Juan Maglio. «Dedicated to my friend the jockey Luis Laborde». Recorded by Maglio.

“Catriló”: also by Maglio. «Dedicated to my dear friend Antonio B. Difranco».

“El combate (Quasi nada)”, by Maglio. It refers to the name of a stud. «Dedicated to Mr. Alberto Mazza». Recorded by Maglio and Juan D’Arienzo.

Espiga de oro (¡Smasher!)”: by Maglio. «Dedicated to the honorable Mr. Juárez Celman».

Reina de Saba”: by Rosendo Mendizábal. «Dedicated to Mr. Federico Sívori». Recorded by Firpo.

“Poliya”: also by Mendizábal. «Dedicated to Mrs. Susana Cambaceres de Luro and Mr. Alfredo Cambaceres».

Ocurrencia en marcha”: by Perla Mamberto (for the mare named “Ocurrencia”), without dedication.

“Ocurrencia”: by Guido Vanzina Pacheco. «Dedicated to the honorable sportsman Mr. Don S.J.U». It refers to the same mare as above.

El clásico”: by Carlos Hernani Macchi. «Dedicated to my brother Eduardo».

“Lunático”: by Guillermo Barbieri and Eugenio Cárdenas. It was «Dedicated with admiration to my good partner Carlos Gardel». It was never recorded, either by Gardel or by others.

Guanaco”: by Carlos Posadas. «Dedicated to Mr. Honorio Valdez».

“El tapao”: by Leopoldo Thompson. «Dedicated to my brother-in-law José Bonano and to my friend Juan Manuel Firpo». The latter was Osvaldo Fresedo’s bandoneon teacher and who together with Macchi, Bonano and Thompson formed the La Armonía quartet.

“Stud Pajonal”: by Luis Buttaro. «Dedicated to my beloved friend Emilio Boucau».

“Inspector”: by Valentín Jaimovich. «Dedicated to Mr. Juan Murás, owner of horse winner of the Great Poll of Colts in 1912».

“Enérgica”: by Alfonso Ferrari. «Dedicated to the honorable Mr. Williams Paats». The componer was a bandoneon player and componed, among others: “Ermelinda”, “La buseca”, “Púa de oro”, “¡Qué yeta!”, “¡Qué gracia!”.

El recodo”: by Alejandro Junnissi. «Dedicated to Alejandro Ramón and Eladio Baraldo Moreno». It was committed to disc on several occasions and was recorded by Carlos Di Sarli.

“Fine mouche”: by Reinaldo Pellone. «Dedicated to my dear uncle Alberto Carpanelli».

“Mamita segunda”: by Pablo Laise. «Dedicated to the outstanding sportsman Justo C. Saavedra and to the composer Honorio Valdez».

“Viejo pillo”: also by Laise. «Dedicated to the well-known sportsman Ernesto Dufour and the trainer Juan Lapistoy and the jockey Luís P. Menini».

“Stud Los Cardos”: by Laise. «Dedicated to the great Jockey David Englander».

“Peregrino”: another one by Laise. «Dedicated to the honorable Mr. Eladio Vidal, owner of the mentioned horse».

Don Santiago”: the last by Laise. «Dedicated to the renowned sportsman and founder of the Hipódromo San Martín, Don Santiago Fontanilla and to the general administrator Don Esteban Habiaque, respectfully».

“Añencué”: by Francisco Storino. «Dedicated to the honorable owner Mr. Gervasio Mentastés, as testimony of great affection».

“Augusta”: by M. F. Alfieri. In the heading is written: «Homage to the race won on July 1, 1917. Jockey Juan Ceraño. Trainer José Ghigliolti.». He also composed: “Chambellán”, “El dengue”, “¿Qué hace Don Victorino?”, “Siete y medio”, “Tururún”, “Alma negra” and the waltz “Nuevas brisas”.

“La argentinita”: by Genaro Nerón Domínguez. «Dedicated to the honorable sportsman A. Barreiro y Ortega».

Castigando”: Ricardo Gaudenzio. «Dedicated to my friends P. Polito, D. Petillo, A. Petillo and R. Rinaldi». All members of the first Francisco Canaro’s quartet. Gaudenzio, a violinist who died in 1960, in 1908 joined the Vicente Greco’s group that performed at the Café “La Turca” in La Boca. He also played with Augusto Berto. He is composer of “El chupete” and “Es de ley”.

Gran muñeca”: by Alfredo Bevilacqua. «Dedicated to the South American jockey Domingo Torterolo».

“La pingüina”: by José J. Ibarra (winner of the Gran Premio Packoy in 1917). «Dedicated to my friend Belisario Olivera».

“Solipón”: by Pedro Polito. «Dedicated to the honorable gentlemen Ignacio Correas, Miguel A. Juárez Celman, Rodolfo Prieto, Alfredo Rodríguez and the Haras Las Hortigas».

“La rodada”: also by Pedro Polito. «Dedicated to my dear friends and partners Francisco Canaro and José Martínez». Recorded by Canaro in 1915.

“Aluminé”: by Anselmo Aieta, «Dedicated to the composer and jockey Luis Laborde».

“Cabaret”: by Aieta. «Dedicated to the honorable owner Mr. Alberto A.Muro».

“Suri”: by Rodolfo A. Sassone. «Dedicated to Armando Noschese and the popular trainer Naciano Moreno».

“Lomauquén”: by Luis Teisseire. «Dedicated to Mr. Juan B. Saffouret, horse breeder».

“Aplanadora”: by Hugo Matienzo. «Dedicated to my close friends».

“Capablanca”: by Adolfo Pérez (Pocholo). «Dedicated to the renowned composer Naciano Moreno and to Joaquín Noschese, affectionately».

“Campanazo”: by Luis Buttaro. «Dedicated to my friend José Boucau».

Palospavos”: by Miguel La Salvia. «Dedicated to the crack of trainers Don Juan Torterolo”. Recorded by the “Cuarteto La Armonía”. A violinist who died in 1945, made his debut in 1912 with a trio that included Carlos Marcucci. He was member of the large orchestra that in 1924 Julio De Caro put together for the carnival balls of 1924 at the “L´Aiglón” saloon.

“Desertor”: by Enrique Sviza. «Dedicated to my beloved friend Antonio Riccio».

“La clave (Júpiter)”: by Francisco De Marco (José). In the heading says: «Dedicated to the dexterous bandoneon player Maglio Pacho». The drawing of the front cover is a race in which the bandoneons, as if they were horses, are ridden by jockeys -we think- the members of the Juan Maglio’s group, because Pacho is heading them, according to the caricature and the huge moustache he boasted at that time.

Brujo”: by Domingo Greco. «Dedicated to the honorable Mr. Mario Tezanos Pinto».

“Qué querés”: also by Domingo Greco. «Dedicated to the friend jockey Martín Duró».

Desahuciado”: by Rafael Giovinazzi and Salvador Grupillo. On the front cover, at the heading we read: «Carlos Arata presents a gift to his friend R. De La Cruz». Giovinazzi, his true family name was Giovinazzo, he was a pianist (1905-1983). He was member for a long time of the orchestra led by Juan Guido. He wrote the waltz “Mascotita de marfil” and the tango “Coquetita” written by Juan Guido. Both were committed to disc by Carlos Gardel.

“Jubillo”: by José Guerriero (or José Guarello, his other signature). «Dedicated to my dear friend Alberto Larrandart». He was member of the first Juan Maglio’s quartet before 1910. He died in 1954 and he was flutist. He composed “Bronca con la percanta”, “Camandulero”, “Discos dobles”, “El coquetón”, “Subterráneo”, “As de copas”, “As de bastos”, “As de espadas”, “As de oros”.

“Tapón”: by Alberico Spatola. «Dedicated to the popular entertainer Vicente Fernández».

El alazán”: by Alpidio Fernández. «I dedicate this humble memory to Mr. José Morales as testimony of the affection he deserves».

“La recta final”: by Antonio Romano and Javier Mossa. «Dedicated to our friends Luis Pozzi (Luiggin), Juan Podestá and Francisco Ledda».

“Gritería”: by Nicolás Videla. «Dedicated to my uncle Rodolfo G. Videla».

“Meneguina”: Osvaldo Fresedo. «Dedicated to my dear friend Pascual Toscazo».

“Cherin”: by A. A. L., without dedication or other kind of explanation.

“Tiny al freno”: by Gregorio B. Sá. «Dedicated to Mr. Joaquín Gorina. In memory of the Gran Premio Nacional of 1919».

“La largada”: by Santos Aschieri (h). «Dedicated to don Jaime Abella». Other tangos of his are: “De mañanita”, “El que sabe”, “El trío”, “Gentile”, “La fuga”.

“Moralito”: by Ferrazzano and Julio Pollero. «Dedicated with affection to the good friends O. Morales, Oubiña and Luihller and other whips of our race tracks».

“Correntino”: by Pedro Mafia and lyrics by H. S. Lonne. Dedicated to the jockey Elías Antunez.

Tiny”: by Julio De Caro and Maffia. «Dedicated to the honorable Mr. Joaquín Gorina for the triumphs achieved in the great races of the season 1919».

Sin castigar”: by Francisco Peirano. «Dedicated to the friend Carlos Nasca». Recorded by La Rondalla del Gaucho Relámpago. Other tangos of his are: “Cattaneo”, “Contra la «jetta»”, “2 de artillería”, “El maneador” and the waltzes “Sarita”, “Hermelinda”, and “Isabel [b]”.

Buen ojo”: by José Luis Visca. «Dedicated to the renowned sportsman Dr. Benito Villanueva, the trainer Gabriel Torterolo and the jockey Armando Grassi, winner of the classic Pedro Ramírez (the most important in Uruguay)».

“Lemita (Pibe de oro)”: by Guillermo Cavazza and lyrics by Reynaldo Pignataro. «Dedicated to the Pibe de Oro (Golden Boy) of the Argentine horse race track, the unsurpassable jockey Eduardo Lema». Pignataro is author of: “Bien derecha”, “Bajo la careta”, “La gran vía”, “Sos derecho” and the widely known: “No me pregunten por qué”, with music by Carlos Di Sarli.

“Raspail (El caballo de oro”: by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez. «Dedicated to my dear friend Washington Mautone».

Stayer”: by Enea Verardini. «Dedicated to the renowned sportsman Francisco A Marín».

“Mascotón”: by José Bonano, “Pepino”. «Dedicated to the renowned sportsman Humberto Mauro, affectionately». He was violinist of the first Maglio’s quartet and the first in playing a violín-corneta. He composed “De mi pago”, “Desengaño”, “El apache porteño”, “El desastre”, “Pinela”.

“El catedrático [b]”: by Angel Bolla. Without a dedication.

“¿Quién lo sigue?”: by Francisco Russo, Panchito. «Dedicated to my friend Marcos Larrosa

Tres y dos [b]”: by Lorenzo Olivari. «Dedicated to her». There are two numbers with the same name. One by Arolas and the other by Aníbal Troilo.
